Boulder Retaining Wall and Slope Redesign in Northville

Steep front yard slopes are one of those problems that look simple on the surface but can actually make your yard feel unusable - and honestly, kind of rough from the street. Erosion, uneven grades, and that "nothing fits here" feeling are all common with sloped fronts. This Northville home had exactly that going on.

Here's what we were working with - a fairly aggressive slope running along the front of the property, right next to the walk. The grade made it hard to plant anything cleanly, and the whole area lacked definition. Our approach was to reshape the slope and build a natural boulder retaining wall to hold everything in place and give the bed a clean, intentional edge.

The boulders we used aren't uniform cut stone - they're natural rounded fieldstone, which fits the character of the neighborhood and gives the wall a grounded, organic look rather than something that feels slapped on. Once the wall was set and the grade was corrected, we reworked the planting bed above it with fresh black mulch and kept the existing plant material that was worth saving. The result is a bed that actually reads as designed, not just filled in.

What really changes here is how the whole front of the home reads from the street. The wall creates a clear separation between the lawn and the planting bed, the slope feels intentional now, and the house itself just looks better for it. That's what good landscape design does - it doesn't just fix a problem, it makes everything around it look sharper too.

Small jobs like this are some of our favorites. There's no massive install or months-long timeline - just a specific problem, a clear solution, and a front yard that looks completely different when we're done. If you've got a slope, a drainage issue, or a bed that's never quite looked right, this is exactly the kind of work we do well.
